Oil & Cold Wax Workshop

03/05/21

Last weekend I had the pleasure of delivered my first face to face painting workshop in months. It felt wonderful to be back teaching, sharing my skills and knowledge with others. The day was fun and informative and was a chance for like minded creatives to come together to learn about more about Cold Wax medium and how it can be combined with oil paint to create richly textured paintings, full of layers and marks.

Cold wax medium is a mixture of natural bees wax and solvent and is a semi-solid paste that requires no heat to apply or fuse layers, so it blurs the lines between oil painting and encaustic painting. As the solvent evaporates the wax hardens and dries to a matte finish adding body and texture to the paint.

I’ve used cold wax in my paintings for a few years now and its such a diverse medium that has so many possibilities that I feel i’ve only begun to scratch the surface on what it can do.

Such a great day learning cold wax techniques with Laura. Feel like this is the technique I’ve been looking for my whole life, such a good way to scrape back layers that become a story.

I also find I always learn so much from seeing how others approach working with the wax and find it fascinating how everyone brings something of themselves to the process. I love teaching as I find it’s the perfect compliment to my solitary studio practice and allows me to connect with others which I greatly enjoy.

I will be delivering another introductory cold wax course later in the year and will also be delivering a more in-depth 2 day course for those than have completed my 1 day workshop or who have their own experience of the medium. Details of both of these can be found by clicking the button below.
